Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Between Rock Fans

Marking two decades after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match coloured notes scrolling down the display in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable impact on numerous musicians included, showcasing classic groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges in securing the songs – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song because the cost prohibitive,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game took off, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived older hits to the forefront: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, but then once it got featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained not available in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the band during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and related stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band more money than any of their records. It sold well over half a million units upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” says musician the artist.

The band previously wrapped up a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I remember the record label informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and newer releases have maintained the scene active, and there’s expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
